HIV-related areas of research

In this fourth decade of the AIDS epidemic, HIV Center research addresses three overarching challenges: (1) individual vulnerabilities – mental illness, substance use, and gender and health disparities – that facilitate risk and hinder adherence to prevention and care; (2) the need for behavioral and social science research to maximize the potential of biomedical prevention and treatment technologies; and (3) effective translation of research into “real-world” practice to close the gap among research, policy, and practice.

The HIV Center’s research – conducted in New York City, New York State, and countries hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic – is focused in the following major areas:

HIV Prevention and Treatment in the Context of Mental Health, Substance Use, and Health and Social Disparities
Optimizing Health Outcomes along the HIV Treatment Cascade: HIV Testing, Linkage and Retention in Care, and Treatment Adherence
Behavioral Health and HIV Interventions for Vulnerable Youth and Families
Translation, Adaptation, and Adoption of HIV Interventions in US and International Community and Clinical Care Settings
HIV Sexual Risk and Prevention across Populations, including in the Context of Same-Sex Behavior
Combining Behavioral Science with Multimedia and Emerging Biotechnologies for HIV Prevention and Treatment
Ethics, Policy, and Society in the Context of HIV/AIDS
